Ploërmel Communauté - Making waste sorting easy to understand, without talking down
Context
As part of the rollout of new waste collection standards, Ploërmel Communauté wanted to raise residents’ awareness of the new sorting rules and zero-waste habits, through a series of explainer videos for social media and the local authority’s website.
This project was carried out as Head of Motion Design at Yalp. I designed and led the project, from creating the graphic universe to the final production of the videos.

Approach
The main challenge of this project was less technical than educational: how to convey dense information (new sorting rules, responsible consumption habits) clearly, without sounding like a school lesson or lecturing residents. This guided several choices:
- A graphic universe built from simple geometric shapes, to create illustrations that are instantly readable, even on technical subjects such as waste categories
- A playful treatment of colors and textures, to balance the informational load with a visual experience that’s pleasant to follow
- An organic sound design, consistent with the subject (recycling, materials, nature) rather than a generic soundscape
- Constant calibration between education and respect for the audience: every script and every sequence was designed to inform without ever implying that residents didn’t know the basics of sorting.
A dense subject to make accessible to your users or residents?

Results
The series of three two-minute videos was published on social media and on the Ploërmel Communauté website, as the main vehicle of the campaign raising awareness of the new collection rules. The videos have gathered more than 5,000 views in an area of just under 20,000 inhabitants.
