Centre Eugène Marquis - 100 years serving cancer patients

Context

The Centre Eugène Marquis chose Yalp to highlight its mission on the occasion of the center’s 100th anniversary. The goal was to tell the story of the project’s origins, driven by Eugène Marquis from the 1920s onwards, all the way to today’s latest technological advances. The motion design had to reflect the dedication of the caregivers and the human support offered to patients.

This project was carried out as Head of Motion Design at Yalp.

My role

I took part in the project from A to Z, from writing the script to the animation. I also took part in the various discussions with the clients, who were very involved in the project and kindly guided me through the storytelling of the retrospective.

Approach

This large-scale project required several weeks of production and clear approval stages:

  • Initial scoping: defining the key message with the clients, the tone to adopt, and the major milestones to highlight, and setting the schedule
  • Script writing: the main difficulty was telling 100 years of history in a few minutes without it feeling too chronological or purely factual. We had to find a tone, an angle, and a way of narrating that was both captivating and factual. The storytelling work was a decisive stage of the project.
  • Art direction: I imagined a colorful, illustrated universe consistent with the story being told, while alluding to the colors of the Centre Eugène Marquis brand guidelines. The graphic proposals had to be both soft and comforting while remaining professional.
  • Storyboard: this stage gave shape to the ideation and turned the script into images, which allowed the clients to picture the result and approve the creative proposals.
  • Animation: this final part took up a large share of the production time because of the ambitious storyboard we had proposed to the client. I animated the scenes, then the characters, before adding all the grain, light, and texture effects that give depth to the motion design.

Do you have a story or a human commitment to tell with care and accuracy?
