Ouest-France - Illustrating “Nos Vies”
Context
Ouest-France is the leading French-language daily newspaper. Its online section "Nos Vies" (“Our Lives”) shares personal testimonies through themed series.
I’ve had the chance to illustrate many slices of life since 2020.
The purpose of these illustrations is to encourage clicks while introducing the article in question.

"When doctors fall ill themselves"

"Gifted adults"

Mon rôle
I synthesize testimonies and give them visual form. These illustrations become the showcase of the articles and are used in particular on social media to drive clicks.
"Inheritances that divide families"

"Inside urbex: forbidden places"

Approach
Illustration projects with Ouest-France’s art direction always unfold in the same way:
- Reading and synthesizing the article: discovering the theme and highlighting the stakes, the journalistic angle, and the strongest moments of the testimonies. The aim is to understand the substance of the article and what makes it powerful.
- Sketches: once the angle or angles have been identified, I strive to find original visual ways to represent them. What matters here is the composition of the image and its metaphorical dimension. There’s no question of choosing colors or illustration styles. I stay purely in pencil sketches to focus on the substance.
- Sketch approval: I share one or more sketches with Ouest-France’s art direction, and we discuss them if needed to adjust certain elements of the illustration.
- Final artwork: once the sketch has been approved, I get carte blanche every time. Once the ideation is properly aligned with the editorial line, the creative part is completely free.
