Creative director and motion design who loves to tells stories.

My name is Kevin Aloui, I'm a freelance creative director and motion designer. What do I do? I tell stories (but no lies, I pinky swear).

I have a blast taking complex subjects to make them simple to understand and crystal clear - but also easy on the eye.

I work with many clients:

  • creative agencies,
  • large companies that need specific skills on their projects,
  • small companies building their visual language.

Self-taught designer & adventurer

I've been guiding my clients for almost ten years on their graphic and video projects, from the design to the deliverables. I took my first (creative) steps in the USA: a year at the University of Oregon (Eugene, OR) before working in Marketing & PR in Portland (OR) for Ace Hotel. Ever since, I've been working with global teams on multilingual projects.

I've built my expertise step by step: I worked in marketing in a startup company, then as a graphic design in a 360 creative agency, before going freelance for the first time. Later I joined Yalp as Head of Motion Design, where I managed a team and worked on video productions.

I also pass on my passion to design students while finding new ways to give class. I am laying the foundations for a more inclusive design (representation, eco-friendliness) and challenge the learning models  and work/life imbalances rooted in the industry. This teaching role allows me to be an agent of change but also forces me to stay thorough on design basics. This mission enriches my work and gives it meaning.

On occasion it's not impossible that I bribe my students with cookies.

Why I do what I do - you won't believe number 4!

  1. The love for this job.
  2. The will to discover new things.
  3. My curated playlists.
  4. Mostly my cats (and most loyal assistants) who are begging for their breakfast and their recommended daily amount of hugs.

How I work

Whether I’m working as a subcontractor for an agency, directly with a big company, or alongside a young business, my approach remains the same: understanding and translating the project’s objectives before suggesting any graphic solution. This scoping stage is what guarantees smooth collaboration from start to finish.

In practice, I am able to:

  • Integrate seamlessly into an existing team when working for an agency, while respecting the deadlines, methods, and brand guidelines already in place
  • Structure clear processes when approvals involve several decision makers, as is often the case with larger companies
  • Stay flexible and responsive when facing the budget and speed constraints specific to young businesses

FAQ

Do you work directly with companies, or only through agencies?
Both. I work as a subcontractor for communication agencies on their client projects, but also directly with companies, both major clients and younger businesses, that need expertise in creative direction or motion design.
What types of projects do you work on?
Product presentation videos, explainer motion design, visual identity and graphic adaptations, illustration, storyboards, interface animation, and sound design. This list isn’t exhaustive and varies depending on the project and/or the client’s needs.
I can handle the entire production chain, from script to animation, or just a single step, such as creating graphic assets.
How long does a project take, on average?
Between 3 and 6 weeks for a motion design video, depending on complexity and the number of revision rounds.
For creative direction, the schedule is set case by case, as it depends on the scale of the project, the approval stages, and the client’s budget.
How does the collaboration work, step by step?

1/ Scoping the brief and objectives
2/ Creative proposal and creative direction approval
3/ Production
4/ Delivery and revision rounds until the final version

There are approval checkpoints at each key stage to avoid unpleasant surprises. The number of revision rounds is defined upfront based on the project.
How much does a motion design or creative direction service cost?
The price depends on two factors: the scope of the project and the available budget. I propose what seems most relevant for the request and I do my best to stay within your budget. An initial conversation helps clarify these points and put together the most accurate proposal.
